There have been many technological improvements to elbow joint implants. As
with any implant, they do not last forever.
A revision of the elbow implant may be required when there is artificial
joint loosening from the bone or high grade plastic wear of the joint's bearing
components.
If you notice increased tenderness, redness or swelling in the elbow, or
significantly increased pain, you may be experiencing problems with your
implant.
Other indicators of elbow implant problems include:
- Dislocation of the elbow
- Sudden changes in range of elbow motion
- Lengthening of the arm
- Changes in the posture or alignment of the elbow and arm
If the pain in your elbow becomes significant, you may need to visit your
physician to find out your treatment options. Your physician will re-examine
your elbow, and may even ask to have an x-ray or CT scan performed to determine
the status of the implant.
Your surgeon will then be able to talk to you about what complications have
occurred and what treatment options are available. In some cases, having another
elbow implant operation may be the only option.
