What is an MRI?

What do I need to do to be prepared for my MRI scan?
You will be asked to remove watches, credit cards, jewelry, keys, hearing aids and any other metal objects before entering the ~RI suite. Please come wearing comfortable clothing that will allow easy access to the area of your body that is being examined. Patient gowns will be provided if itis necessary to change.

Please inform the doctor or technologist prior to your exam if you have aneurysm clips, metal plates, metal pins, a cardiac pacemaker, joint replacements or if there is a chance you may be pregnant.

How is the MRI Performed?
During the examination you will be asked to lie still on a table. You will be positioned so that the extremity being imaged is in the magnet opening. There is no pain, or unusual I sensations. During the scan you may hear a mild tapping sound.

What are the risks of having an MRI scan?
An MRI scan is a safe, painless way for the doctor to evaluate the area of interest with no known side effects.

What can I expect from my extremity MRI scan?
During your procedure you will be asked to lie quietly on the examination bed for approximately 30 - 60 minutes. You are free to talk, read or sleep while the scanner is in operation. This examination is being performed on a dedicated, open extremity scanner with your head and most of your body outside the magnet therefore, it is very unlikely that you will experience claustrophobia.
