Understanding Disk Degeneration Diseases

In spondylolisthesis, one of the bones in of the spine — called a vertebra — slips forward and out of place. This may occur anywhere along the spine, but is most common in the lower back (lumbar spine). In some people, this causes no symptoms at all. Others may have back and leg pain that ranges from mild to severe.
Many types of spondylolisthesis can affect adults. The two most common types are degenerative and spondylolytic. There are other less common types of spondylolisthesis, such as slippage caused by a recent, severe fracture or a tumor.

How knee joint injury can lead to osteoarthritis

Knee joint injuries are typically related to sports, such as football, rugby or ice hockey, but people often do not know that such injuries may lead to joint inflammation and post-traumatic osteoarthritis. In advanced post-traumatic osteoarthritis, joint cartilage breaks down completely, causing severe joint pain, lack of mobility and even social isolation. ACL repair success rates improved by long-term physical therapy

A third of people who undergo ACL reconstruction surgery will have osteoarthritis in their injured knee within 10 years. Within two decades, nearly 50 percent will — terrible odds for getting a debilitating condition with no known cure.

While no one yet knows exactly why this is the case, researchers have explored two related theories:

The knee injury itself may cause persistent and chronic inflammation resulting in underlying joint tissue changes.
People who sustain an ACL injury end up moving differently during activities like running, jumping and walking, which causes damage to cartilage over time.

Keying on those theories, researchers from […]
