About Dr. Athanassious

Dr. Christian Athanassious is a board-certified spine surgeon who serves as medical director of Santa Rosa Orthopaedics’ Spine Center. Born in Scotland, Dr. Athanassious was raised in the United States and has been a longtime resident of California, where he earned his undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of California, Davis.

Upon graduation, he was named a Howard Hughes Scholar, serving as a research manager and anatomy lecturer for UC Davis premed and medical school students before entering medical school himself at Drexel University in Philadelphia. Graduating at the top of his class, Dr. Athanassious completed his orthopedic residency at Monmouth Medical Center, where he was selected to serve as the chief resident in his final year.

His return to California was highlighted by his selection for a coveted spot in the prestigious Stanford University Spine Fellowship program, where he studied alongside some of the world’s most renowned spine surgeons.

From his earliest undergraduate days, Dr. Athanassious has been a proponent of a whole-person approach to medical care that never loses sight of the mind-body connection. He takes great pride in being a lifelong learner dedicated to keeping abreast of the latest advances in orthopedic medicine and spine care, in both operative and non-operative modalities.
