The specific therapy recommended for any given patient depends on their age, general health and the nature and severity of their presenting condition. The relative chances of a successful outcome also vary with those factors, but in many cases, significantly reduced pain and increased function can last for years.

Platelet-rich-plasma therapy uses a patient’s own platelets, which are a small fragment of blood cells that help in clotting and contain over 300 active growth factors, including various hormones to simulate cells and promote their recovery.

An added benefit of PRP is that patients face less risk of infection or allergic reaction, as the platelets are taken from their own blood and separated from the original sample by a process known as centrifugation. The process enhances the plasma, which is then reinjected at the injury site. This fact combined with the procedure being quite brief and not requiring general anesthesia usually makes for quicker recovery time and stands as a viable option for patients for whom standard treatments have proven ineffective.

In stem cell therapy, physicians use cells grown in a lab which are then manipulated to form specialized cells for injection into an injury site, where they form brand new cells capable of rehabilitating the area—often much faster and more effectively than the patient’s damaged cells could accomplish.
